Diverse Fest – A New Ability Performance Festival

Diverse Fest is a new ability performance festival in music, dance and drama, for those with learning difficulties/disabilities of all ages.  The event will take place on Saturday 14th January (12pm-8pm) in the Royal Hall at the Spa in Bridlington and we hope that it will become a yearly event.

Our aim is to create a fun, safe and inspiring event where people of all abilities can come together and showcase their talents.  We want the event to grow each year and to bring people together from all communities across the region to support one another and make new and lasting friendships.

The festival is being run jointly by volunteers from ‘We are Theatre’ and ‘The Den: Bridlington Inclusive Youth Theatre’, with support from East Riding Council, and we are keen to hear from anyone who would like to get involved with helping in general with the festival, either before or on the day.

There is a small group of adults and youngsters with learning difficulties in Bridlington who are already helping with the festival and they’d love to hear from you.

We aim to have a range of stalls and activities during the non-performance times and organisations/groups are welcome to have a stall to publicise their work, sell items (no food products) to raise funds for themselves or even run some activities and showcase skills.

It is just £5 to have a stall and these can be booked through We are Theatre.   It would be great if you could pass on this information to any groups you know who may like to promote their work.

We will also be running a karaoke-type session, where people can bring their own CD and sing along to a song or two onstage using the microphone and sound system.  There will also be a disco to end the day.  An initial outline for the day is below, though this is subject to change depending upon the number of performance groups.

  • Karaoke/Stalls/Activities: 12pm-2pm & 4pm-6pm
  • Performances: 2pm-4pm & 6pm-7pm
  • Disco: 7pm-8pm

The event is free groups who perform and just £3 to anyone else.  The £3 covers access all day (come & go as you want) and is available in advance from The Spa (01262) 678258 or on the door, subject to availability.

There will be access to dressing rooms for all performance groups before and after their performance time and we have access to the venue from 9am on the day for any stallholders or anyone who may wish to come along earlier and see the space.

We will be using the floor space in the Royal Hall for the main performances which will allow for both a flexible performance and seating space.  In theory we could accommodate a performance in the round.  If this is something of interest to you, please let us know.

The stalls (and any activities) will be located around the edge of the Royal Hall and we anticipate keeping the stalls open during the performances, though the activities will stop during this time.

There is no parking onsite but stallholders can drive up to the back doors to load/unload and there is an area outside the main Spa entrance for groups to be dropped off/picked up from. There are a number of car parks and on street parking nearby.

We have an official poster with timings on and we would appreciate it if you’re able to help us spread the word.  The event is open to everyone and we are keen to promote a real community connection.

We have a Facebook page for the event ( and there is also a specific twitter account @diverse_fest as well as our account @wearetheatre

All performers will be issued with a specific timetable, performance slot and wristbands prior to the event.  All stall holders will have wrist bands allocated to them as well.

Any further questions, please contact Directors Charlotte or Donna at or telephone 07521 364107.
